Well this week was uhmmmm...a week. The long culmination of school work and projects has finally dawned on me. After many days of procrastination and a mindset of "I'm just gonna do it tomorrow", I'm stressing out!! I have a love and hate relationships with due dates, I hate having them but I love them as they build in you a sense of time. If you haven't notice, the title of this blog entry is from the immortal Shakespeare. It seems foolish and I do not know how it will relate to the substance of this blog. Which is to debate the importance of homework in the lives of students and the gravity to which it helps them compete in the cutthroat local and (more cutthroat) international labor markets. I finally decided to do a blog about school work (I don't like saying homework because I feel like a kid when I say it) because I always whine about it in little paragraphs in each blog entry. So I'm gonna do a full entry about it.
I also wrote this blog because we recently did a school survey to voice any student's concerns and suggestions. I was not able to finish because I graciously timed out (!!!) as I wrote many a good suggestions. So this is blog is also acting as a channel to express that. I do not know whether my suggestions (or any others) will be implemented because people like to talk and acting on it, especially students' suggestions gets watered down. I'm sorry mein Social Studies teacher (I know you are one of the facilitators to this project) and I know that you're probably screaming at the top of your lungs. But I lack your abundance of optimism. Also two events materialized itself pertaining to homework close to me. Bah! I have gone off topic as always. Pardon my train of thoughts.
Pro for School work at home:
School work at home was established so that students are able to fully understand the issues or topics that they are studying. It helps them get prepare for more difficult concepts later on in life. If we abolish homework especially in the early stages of schooling, then how can we expect them to do it later in life which there are more complex and really difficult topics. It is proven that in the early stages of life, children understands and absorbs topics and ideas more easily. Therefore it is easier to mold their minds to accept homework as a necessity for a good education. How are they going to compete with other students who have certain ideas/topics embedded in their ideas. We need homework as a foundation in education. A strong foundation enables us to properly build walls, roofs, etc or in this case a strong professional, personal and social ethics.
Con for School work at home:
Homework in childhood limits the bond between the child and its parents. This can lead to social problems later on in life. This stage in a person's life is crucial because this is the foundation for how they will interact and socialize with other human beings. Homework can also contribute to the fact that students spend most of their time doing homework while their families are being neglected. Sometimes homework does not even work. The way we should approach this is that we need to teach the students more relevant and relate-able topics. Giving them books full of equations and questions, only makes the information last for the present not future.
(Need any help?)
Whether you support one of the arguments aforementioned above there is one fact that we cannot doubt. Education is one the things that should always be evolving. We have to audit and take a look at education not every 5 or 10 years but every year. We shouldn't compromise the education of anybody to save money. That is beyond a reasonable doubt.
