The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.......part 1

Hello Dear Readers,

I come to you a learned man this week and when man learns, he sprouts with him opinion. This is basically the theme of this blog entry. An opinion that is good, bad and ugly. Side note: I always like it when authors, writers and playwrights somehow manages to include the title of their work to the substance of their creation. It seems very smart and funny. : ). Without further ado, let us start with the good.

The Good: the Meiji Reformation

I have prior knowlegdge about this key event in our world history but its stories never ceases to amaze me. Japan a country that was heavily embbed with feudalism, traditional values and isolation managed to be a shining beacon of modernity, technology and compromise. I say compromise because the Japanese people were able to modernize without abandoning much of their traditional culture. Sure, there were those who were resistant to the sudden change and cause bloodshed. But in the end, Japan became a major player in the international stage. To the point that they were also able to contain the behemoth that was Imperial Russia (through the Russo-Japanese War). The first non-European/white country to do so. Even now, Japan continues to lead the world in many various fields. One can learn many a great things from studying Japan and its rich, beautiful history.

This (the Meiji Reformation) is the epitome of transition and adaptation that bore great fruits. Change is irrevocable and necessary. It is up to us in whether we decide to go against it or with it. Many remained ignorant and was washed away. Japan is of the few who acted in such way that ensured their cultural survival, guaranteed economic and political sovereignty and was able to exponentially grow at the same time. Of course, like all others Japan was and is not perfect. But I am captivated and enthralled time and time again by people, in this case a country, that was audacious enough to look and think beyond now. Foresight is key dear Readers and the lack of it leads to ignorance and ignorance then leads to destruction. Muahahahahaha!

The Bad: Private Hegemony

Let me start off by saying , I am not anti-European. In fact, I love Europe and would like to travel there before I kick the bucket. But I have to wag my finger against their ancestors because of the deep divide and array of problems that they have cause their former colonies. I would like to narrow the effects down to the Congo. I will not talk about the current situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo because it is far too complex though the issues are nonetheless pressing. What I will talk about is the venture of King Leopold II of Belgium and Henry Morton Stanley.

What the greedy, old man did was atrocious, criminal and pure evil. Leopold with the help of Stanley duly exploited the indigenous and natural landscape of the Congo. The Belgian king accomplished this through the "Congo Free State", of which he is the sole founder and owner of. Almost every rubber tree in the Congo was cut down. Africans were enslaved, tortured and was sent to forced labor. To stir fear into their hearts and to remind them that they were nothing but property, they were mutilated. Children, the old and women were not spared of this horror. Hundreds of thousands, even millions, were killed during this disgusting period. There was no sense of decency for these people who claimed to be superior than the rest.It is unfortunate and evil.
